Module Database, EX seriesEX series: Series overview: These modules are set in an alternative plane, dubbed "Wonderland" (based on "Alice in Wonderland"). While they were originally designed for use in the Greyhawk Castle dungeon complex, they can be added to virtually any campaign. In Greyhawk, access to Wonderland is through Greyhawk Castle, the demi-god Zagyg's former stronghold. The modules both feature some famous Greyhawk mages, but indirectly.
EX1: Dungeonland Setting: AD&D 1st Edition, Wonderland Characters: 4-8 of levels 9-12 Written by: E. Gary Gygax Year: 1983 New spells: None New magical items: Deck of Illusions, Hat of Disguise New creatures: Executioner's Hood (MMII 64), Hangman Tree (MMII 64, MoM 293) What you get: 32 page booklet with cover Summary: The PCs fall down a seemingly endless pit, and wind up in Wonderland. Personal notes This is a hoot to play, silly, dangerous and down right weird. Make sure you (and indeed your players) have read Alice in wonderland at some point in your life (In my case I sneaked the Disney video on one day and waited three months before playing the adventure.) Has a great battle to end all battles with a picnic at the end (I kid you not). Silly , entertaining stuff just don't take it to seriously. Value to modern players Difficult, itís a comedy themed adventure, you have to play it right or it will bomb big time. Thankfully the jokes are left in the hands of the DM as is the overall style (something that Skip Williams should learn in his so called comedy adventures.)
EX2: Land Beyond the Magic Mirror Setting: AD&D 1st Edition, Wonderland Characters: 4-8 of levels 9-12 Written by: E. Gary Gygax Year: 1983 New spells: Aid (C2), Murlynd's Ogre (M4), Murlynd's Void (M6), Spook (I1), Whispering Wind (I2), Phantom Steed (I3). New magical items: Staff-Mace, Buckler Wand, Buckler Knife, Egg of Desire, Shoes of Fharlanghn New creatures: Giant Bee (MMII 17, MoM 204), Giant Dragonfly (MMII 59, MoM 204), Eblis (MMII 62, MoM 27), Lightning Quasi-Elemental (MMII 103), Oliphant (MMII 96, MoM 107) What you get: 32 page booklet with cover Summary: The PCs go through the magic mirror and back into Wonderland. Personal notes This is nastier in feel than Dungeonland, basically the same sort of thing as EX1, indeed run them close together and it just won't work. I also found the joke like atmosphere of EX1 harder to re capture in this one, but that might just be me. Value to modern players As EX1 above. |
