Summary: This module introduces the small village of Hommlet and has a small adventure in the moathouse of the Temple of Elemental Evil. From the blurb: "The village of Hommlet has grown up around a crossroads in a woodland. Once far from any important activity, it became embroiled in the struggle between gods and demons when the Temple of Elemental Evil arose but a few leagues away. Luckily for its inhabitants, the Temple and its evil hordes were destroyed a decade ago, but Hommlet still suffers from incursions of bandits and strange monsters..."

Personal notes

This was a naughty module, starts out well and promises a lot, in fact thatís the problem itís a cracking good low level adventure that suggests there are more to be published. Sadly they never saw the light of day until temple of elemental evil was released year and years later.

Personal notes

Ok, if you have been reading these personal notes you should have picked up that I like three things Mr. Gygax writes. This is not action packed wilderness, nor is it a long lost tomb (though it has imprisoned people in it) this is a bash. I like Mr. Gygax when he writes bashes, I like the little dungeons. And thatís the thing, TOEE is huge and I mean HUGE. Itís a sprawling mess of rooms. I have never managed to DM a party down the whole thing (and I have tried about 6 times) the party will suffer from burn out or get bored with the whole thing. Gygax adds in a few cute rooms and gives you the basics to play dungeon politics (much like the defense system in Halls of the Fire giant king and the ogre in Keep on the borderlands) but apart from that your in dice rolling territory. A few rooms still make my chuckle (the mad creature made up from parts is a blast to RP and a welcome respite form the constant shouts for initiative dice) but they are to few and far between. One day Ill crack how to run this adventure because I am sure it will be worth it in the long run. The village of Hommelt at the start gives you a false idea about the adventure, if it had kept style with that and also had the 500 room temple in it.. well this would be the greatest module on the planet, as it is.. this is the greatest bash module on the planet.

Value to modern players

Buy this or Undermountain, its that sort of choice.
