>> history <<Legends of Terris was the first product of the online games company. The fevered brain child of head designer, Paul Barnett, Terris was born mid 1993, in the front seat of a company Mondeo. Then a telephone system salesman, Paul abandoned a life of ring tones and ring roads, to spend nine months of his life writing the massive Terris gameworld. Having found Doug Goldner, his coding Guru and business partner, an engine was created, and from then on Terris flourished.Launched in 1994 from Sub Cyberia, Englands first internet cafe, Legends of Terris went on to become a huge success. Picked up by AOL, it quickly achieved the still undisputed title of largest ever game usage for AOL Europe, and was lauded as the highest rated game on AOL for five consecutive years. During this time, the game world expanded and developed as a huge online community of players grew up with the game. 1999 saw the release of a second OGC game, Legends of Cosrin. An expansion of design ethics learnt from Terris, Cosrin was aimed at the more experienced elements of the online games community, with more challenging game play and reward system. Subsequently, it was leased out to the gaming site, Freeloader.com where Legends of Cosrin enjoyed consistant web traffic of thousands of players. In the year 2000 work to improve the client software also began, seeing the player's window to the game change from a simple Telnet program to a full colour user friendly interface. Development of this continued through to 2001, with the addition of sound files and pop up graphics to the program. 2001 Also saw the launch of two new games, both created under license with the hobbyist miniature company, Games Workshop. The first game, Chainsaw Warrior, created to be a fast, fun and freely down loadable game quickly became a success, with tens of thousands of people logging on to play. Collaboration with Games Workshop also produced the next Massively Multiplayer Game, Wolfenburg. Created from the established game world of 'Warhammer Fantasy Role play' Wolfenburg offers a chance for role play aficionado's and computer gamers alike to experience Games Workshop's medieval fantasy world. Additions to the creative team late in 2001 allowed the Wolfenburg Game world to be rapidly and consistently expanded, together with further expantion of the setting for Legends of Terris. 2002 has seen further game world and client software inprovements. 'Legends of Cosrin' has made a smooth transition onto OGC servers, to take up a role as a subscription based game, whilst the first official Mudfest convention has prooved a huge sucess with the playerbase. Completion of the Legends of Terris player manual, a collection of Terris inspired books and early discussions of development of a virtual 'chat world' also move the company in interesting new directions. |
